Only a handful of Filipino athletes have qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and hopefully bring home that elusive first Olympic gold medal. For the first Filipino rower to secure a spot in the Olympics after 20 years in Cris Nievarez, one can only imagine what he must have felt.
On Monday's episode of Tungo Sa Ginto, Nievarez revealed to Carlo Pamintuan how he reacted upon knowing that he is going to Tokyo.
"I was very happy because what we only knew is that there's still a chance to qualify, but we weren't happy fully because there was no official (announcement) yet," Nievarez shared.
When the official announcement came, he revealed having difficulty in explaining his feelings.
"I can't explain my emotions. It was very happy because, after 20 years, there will be a Filipino rower who will represent the Philippines in the Olympics,"
Nievarez also shared that he first called his mom to share the big announcement.
"My mom is very happy," Nievarez said.
And we all are.
