Bannered by Joshua Munzon, Alvin Pasaol, CJ Perez and Mo Tautuaa, the Philippine National Basketball Team, also known as “Gilas Pilipinas” are gonna try it's own luck in Graz, Austria as they will clash against the best 3X3 squads in the world for the chance to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Gilas  belongs in 'Pool C' along with Slovenia, France, Qatar and Dominican Republic. The tournament will start in May 26 and it will end on May 30.

If they will qualify for the Olympics, they will be the first Philippine Basketball team to do it since 1972.

So, how would they qualify and what do they need to do?

According to FIBA, each team plays the other 4 in their respective pools. The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarter-finals and will play knock-out games all the way to the semi-finals.

The crossing for the quarter-finals will be as follows:
A1-C2
D1-B2

(The winners of these 2 games will meet in the semi-finals)

B1-D2
C1-A2

(The winners of these 2 games will meet in the semi-finals)

The semi-finals and the third-place games will be known in the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament as the Olympic Ticket games. The winners of these 3 games in both genders will make it to the Tokyo Olympics.

There will be no classification games. Overall standings (places 5 to 20) and pool standings are determined by the following 3x3 standings rules:

If teams are tied after the first step, refer to the next one – and so on.
1. Most wins (or win ratio in case of unequal number of games in inter-pool comparison);
2. Head-to-head confrontation (only taking win/loss into account and applies within a pool only);
3. Most points scored in average (without considering winning scores of forfeits).
If teams are still tied after those three steps, the one(s) with the highest seeding win(s) the tie-breaker.

For short, Gilas Pilipinas need to be at least top 2 in their pool to advance to the Quarterfinals. There are 3 teams per gender that will qualify for the Olympics from this event, so even if they failed to reach the Final Round, they need to be atleast 3rd place for them to earn a ticket to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
