"Another big news that came out this entire week was the departure of one of the best blue guys in CJ Cansino from the UST Growling Tigers." That's exactly how Aaron Atayde opened the discussion about Cansino's move from one University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) school to another UAAP school in the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons. Jinno Rufino even described that development as "really, really, really strange" as he mentioned the statements released by the University of Santo Tomas, by Coach Aldin Ayo, and by the team managers but Rufino geared up by saying that he was entertained by how the recruitment was done by the other UAAP players over social media.
"Jump Thru Hoops" aired its second episode last Tuesday and one of the topics that got tackled was the sudden departure of CJ Cansino who is moving from Espana Boulevard to Diliman in Quezon City. While Atayde described Cansino as a "versatile Swiss Army Knife" kind of a player who can do the little things, Rufino doesn't think that "He (Cansino) is gonna see a lot of minutes (with UP)" primarily because UP is another star-studded team with Bright Akhuetie, Kobe Paras and Ricci Rivero plus the fact that UP is already stacked with recruits from the high school level and the possibility that Juan and Javi Gomez de Liano could return for State U. Jinno doesn't even think that Cansino won't get the instant minutes from the Ateneo Blue Eagles and while Rufino thought that if CJ wants to win, joining UP would be the right move. But if he was to him and that, if he was Cansino, "I would have probably gone to the NCAA"
That's a thought that came across Aaron Atayde's mind too as he even said "CJ Cansino can be the next Robert Bolick (with the San Beda Red Lions)" as many of you know by now, Bolick started his collegiate career with the De La Salle Green Archers where he even won a championship in 2013 but saw his minutes with a star-studded La Salle squad dropping tremendously which made Bolick transfer to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) where he won three championships with the Red Lions on top of the NCAA scoring title 2018 and the assist title in 2017. In Atayde's words, "He (Cansino) would be killing it in San Beda" And with Evan Nelle Taft Avenue-bound, Atayde added that Cansino "could fill in that role. He has a one-year transition (period) to learn the new system in San Beda. They (San Beda) are a well-financed team. 'Kill' everyone there because there's really not much of a competition" Explaining the difference in terms of the brand of basketball between the UAAP and the NCAA, Aaron said the NCAA is a "different basketball game" where it's a little bit more rugged and hard-nosed.
In the end, Aaron Atayde reiterated that "He (Cansino) could have gone wherever he wanted. That they (whichever team he decided to play for) will build a system around him and I think that will make him so much better when it comes to becoming a professional athlete"
