Michael Jordan’s game-worn sneakers was recently sold for a record figure while his car is receiving bids of more than 2 million pesos at an auction.
The objects have reached those prices because of their identification with the retired basketball superstar, and the “The Last Dance” documentary that chronicles the saga of Jordan and his Chicago Bulls, reports said.
Jordan’s pair of Air Jordan 1 Highs was recently sold for $615,000 (more than 30 million pesos) while his 1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 is up for auction at more than $55,000 (more than 2.6 million pesos) as of Friday afternoon.
According to a report from Agence France-Presse (AFP), Christie’s auction house said that the sale surpassed a recent record by the sale of another pair of the basketball legend’s shoes.
The sale broke the record set in May when a pair of Air Jordan 1’s sold for $560,000.
The pair was worn by the NBA megastar during a 1985 exhibition match in Italy when he reportedly dunked the ball so strongly, it shattered the glass backboard.
“This is the original shoe with an actual piece of the backboard, a piece of glass, in the sole of the shoe,” said Caitlin Donovan, head of handbag and sneaker sales at Christie’s, in the AFP report. The auction was organized with Stadium Goods.
Jordan reportedly racked up 30 points while wearing the size 13.5 shoes, which are in the red and black colors of his Chicago Bulls team.
While the sale broke the May record, this new auction landed below the estimated range of $650,000 and $850,000.
Meanwhile, Jordan’s 1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 coupe had a cameo role in the documentary.
According to Car and Driver magazine, after Jordan threw out “the first pitch at a major-league baseball game,” he drove away with the car to escape reporters who are requesting his answers on his NBA retirement.
The Mercedes is finished in Metallic Navy Deep Blue, comes with an automatic transmission, chrome wheels, and amenities such as heated seats and cruise control.
“The Last Dance” was produced by ESPN and Netflix.
