Philippine sports is faced with uncertainties anew due to the alarming spike of new 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) cases. The opening of the brand new Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) season is likely not happening as planned. With uncertainties clouding the start of their PBA careers, Joshua Munzon and Jaime Malonzo opted to remain optimistic during these trying times.
On Monday, Off the Record with Migs and Cesca aired its first episode of the month. Migs Bustos and Cesca Littton-Kalaw had the top two picks of the 2021 PBA Rookie Draft as guests.
Due to the spike of COVID-19 cases, the national government imposed enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila and four other provinces for the second straight week- putting the opening of the new PBA season in jeopardy. Team practices stopped. Players are training at home.
As Litton-Kalaw pointed out, "You're dealing with something different from what previous rookie classes have,"
But for the top two draft picks in this year's draft, it's about staying optimistic.
The incoming new star for the TerraFirma Dyip said that he's continuing individual workouts via Zoom while preparing for the Olympic qualifier as a member of the national 3x3 team. In the end, Munzon reminded, "At the same, we have to be as positive as we can be and make the most of the situation. Being negative isn't going to help us,"
"Hopefully, after this ECQ, we'll be able to get back to practice, get back to doing what we love, but right now, we just gotta stay optimistic, stay positive, and stay safe," Munzon stressed.
Malonzo, the former De La Salle Green Archer, agreed with what his fellow PBA rookie said.
"We definitely gotta stay optimistic. It's a tough time for everybody else. After the ECQ, hopefully, we can get back to it. I'm itching to play, and I'll bet Josh is too," Malonzo said.
"Hopefully, things get better," he added.
Indeed, we are all hoping that things get better.
