Wednesday (Thursday Manila time) saw the Milwaukee Bucks led the way in boycotting their game against the Orlando Magic which was subsequently led to the rest of the field doing the same. For the NBA players who stood by the Bucks' decision, it was in protest against the raging police brutality that has been hitting black African-Americans in the United States with the most recent one being the shooting of Jacob Blake who is likely paralyzed from the waist down after police in Winsconsin shot him seven times with four bullets hitting him. At close range.
Then, that boycott and postponement of the games on Wednesday almost led to the cancelation of the remainder of the playoffs as a poll that was done a meeting amongst teams saw the Los Angele Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers voting to boycott the rest of the playoffs with LeBron James even reported to be walking out in frustration. Fortunately, NBA fans will still have the playoffs to watch as National Basketball Association (NBA) players have decided to continue with the playoffs after LeBron James and the rest of the two teams from Los Angeles had a change of stance.
While Thursday's games (Friday Manila time) are postponed and will be rescheduled, the next step after Wednesday's gloomy dispute will be the players continuing to use their status (as celebrities) as a platform to promote change especially with regards to the social injustice among black men and women in the US. At the same time, the players will also negotiate with the league to increase their messaging on social injustices during broadcasts while working on initiatives with team owners to fund community action programs.
There are still a few things that needed to be discussed in the coming days but two things are certain for now: the Orlando bubble may have pierced but didn't pop and, there will be a coronation of the 2020 NBA champions.
