College of St. Benilde unleashed a big fourth quarter as it scored a 91-72 victory over Mapua in the Pinoyliga Next Man cUP recently at the Activate Hoop Arena in Mandaluyong City.
The Blazers’ B-Team of coach Paolo Layug flexed their depth against their fellow NCAA school, which was key to the win after a close game in the first three quarters. Being the sparring partner of Miguel Corteza helped Michael Mara develop his skills as he led the Taft hoopers with 17 points on 7-of-9 clip from the perimeter.
Point guard Prince Carlos then made it rain from beyond the arc, firing in three triples to backstop Mara with 14 points.
Mapua got 14 points from JC Recto’s 14, while Kobe Dalisay added 13, but the non-factor of Clint Escamis was huge as the Cardinals’ winning start was snapped in this huge defeat.
Benilde kept the game close in the first three quarters and made their move in the payoff period using a 17-4 run, aided by an Angelo Pariñas unsportsmanlike foul to take a huge win.
