Even before Orange Country officials made it official August 24 has been a date in which fans of the late Kobe Bryant remember his greatness both on and off the hardcourt as 8/24 represent both jersey numbers that Bryant wore during his 20-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). And now, 8/24 will be always be remembered as "Kobe Bryant Day". Officially.
Orange Country supervisors didn't go any further in picking the perfect date that will be dedicated to remembering the life and greatness of the five-time NBA champion as they stayed with the exact date fans have known: August 24 or 8/24. The supervisors' vote came at the request of Chairwoman Michelle Steel who is a known fan of the Lakers. Steel said that the Black Mamba is a treasured member of their community and that, the two-time Olympic gold medalist for Team USA, "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."
This move by Orange Country followed what the city of Los Angeles has done back in 2016- the year Kobe Bryant wrapped his NBA career by scoring 60 points in his final dance. It's the perfect date indeed to remember a great who changed the NBA and basketball in so many ways.
