Imagine this: We may be a step closer towards seeing the likes of Rachel Anne Daquis competing against the likes of Alyssa Valdez in one volleyball league. And if things work out smoothly, that scenario will be exciting for the growing number of volleyball fans here in the Philippines and more importantly, it will be an additional boost for Philippine volleyball.
In last night's episode of Usapang PSL where Benny Benitez and his co-moderator, Anthony Suntay, was able to talk with Philippine SuperLiga (PSL) Chairman Philip Juico. While Juico was able to give PSL fans an update on how the league is preparing for their resumption, the latter part of their discussion centered on the PSL possibly merging with the Premier Volleyball League into one volleyball league that many fans are now calling as the "Unity Cup". Juico repeatedly said in last night's episode that having one volleyball league in the Philippines will be a good move for Philippine volleyball while also added that the possibility of a Unity Cup will also help improve our national team in terms of being able to compete better on the international stage given that the Asian Volleyball Confederation has already released a draft of what looks like a loaded 2021 for Asian volleyball. However, the PSL chairman reminded everyone that things have to go through the process and that, he still needs to consider the point of view of the PSL team owners about PSL being merged with the PVL. Suntay even asked Juico why this pending merger is taking so long with Suntay even pointing it out that the possibility of a"Unity Cup" has been a discussion in the volleyball community. Juico responded by saying that they have, in fact, already had several meetings with the organizers and that, "There are certain things we just got stuck". The former volleyball from La Salle is hoping that maybe in the next few weeks, "Things will be clearer"
But one thing is clear for PSL Chairman Philip Juico: "Here at PSL, we want it" And he cautioned volleyball fans for getting too excited about the Unity Cup by saying that it can only be called as good news if and when the players are finally the first game of the Unity Cup, he reiterated that PSL wanted it from the very beginning. A welcome development indeed for Philippine volleyball.
