Where were you on August 10, 2013, when everyone inside the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena and everyone else in the country is crying in front of their TV? Me? I was watching a basketball game at my parents' home with my family and when a little guy named Jimmy Alapag drilled that bombastic three in the final seconds, I can't remember how I reacted but one thing is sure: I was happy as that shot, one of the many clutch shots delivered by our national team, sent our country back into the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup for the first time since 1954.
The game at hand back then: Gilas Pilipinas against their archnemesis and longtime tormentor, the South Koreans. What was at stake was a place in the championship game of the 2013 FIBA Asia Cup Championship and more importantly, a ticket to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. The venue: the MOA Arena which was packed with more than 18,000 in attendance. The problem was: Marcus Douthit, the team's naturalized player at that time, went down with an injury that left Marc Pingris having to face the tall Korean frontline and boy, it was something to be awe as Pingris wounded up with 16 points, 10 rebounds and that clutch steal that helped seal the 86-79 victory for the home team
In time for the game's seventh anniversary tomorrow, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is bringing back the game via their Facebook page on August 15 at 8 PM. This will give Filipino fans the opportunity to rewatch what turned out to be one of the best and unforgettable basketball games in the history of Philippine basketball. Tune in this Saturday at 8 pm at Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Facebook page and let's yell "Laban Pilipinas" together with your family.
