For the first offering in the month of April, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas stressed the need for empowering women as it launches an online series aptly titled, “Women In Charge”.
In a belated celebration of the International Women’s Month, former UP standout and Gilas Women guard Bea Daez-Fabros hosts the series that will have its pilot episode on April 9 at the Facebook page of the SBP.
“You will be inspired by their interesting stories and background on how they fell in love with the sport, on how they want to excelled in the sport, and how they want to continuously raise the level of women’s basketball here in the Philippines”, she said in the teaser video that was uploaded Wedesnday evening.
Women’s basketball has enjoyed its glorious rise in 2019, where Gilas Women snagged a historic golden double in both the 3x3 and the 5-on-5 tournaments on its Southeast Asian Games with a huge following.
Those teams were bannered by the likes of Afril Bernardino, Jack Danielle Animam and Janine Pontejos, with multi-titled Patrick Aquino being the brains behind the program not just as the head coach, but also as its program director in women's basketball.
Through this, the SBP hopes that through this online shows, it can inspire a new set of female basketball players to break any stigma that the sport is only exclusive to men.
