Amidst offers from overseas, Stephan Schrock has decided to stay put in the country as he linked with United City in their debut season of the Philippines Football League, ahead of their launch on Wednesday.
The Azkals skipper has inked a deal with the newly formed club owned by the consortium led by MMC Sportz Asia as they are gearing for their inaugural campaign.
"Having Stephan commit to stay at the new Club means a lot not just to the organization but also to the fans," said co-founder Eric Gottschalk. "He is the captain and the leader of the team and that is what is needed especially since we are trying to establish our new identity on and off the field. "
Schrock led Ceres-Negros to a PFL and Copa double last season, winning the league's MVP award and dished out a record 21 assists in their unbeaten run.
His signing increased the playing squad of United City at 17, all of which came from the former three-time defending champions and were looking to make a statement this year.
Gottschalk added that it will be a huge loss not just for them, but also to the league if he accepted the offer elsewhere.
"His commitment to the local league shows his seriousness of trying to make a difference but also his trust in our vision," he added
The acquisition is a product of their negotiations over the past few weeks and it was clear that Schrock's desire is more than just continue playing at a higher level.
"He also wants to prepare for his second career once he steps off the field," said Gottschalk, in which the midfielder is set to take a dual role of being not just the club captain, but also being their assistant manager.
United City hopes to finalize their roster for the Qatar Airways-backed PFL within this week.
