Time to merge

The fans want it, the players want it and it would be very interesting to see it unfold. Women’s volleyball won’t just get a shot in the arm but a huge boost as well. Sponsors and advertisers might just want a piece of the pie if and when it happens.

A merger will result in only one united women’s volleyball schedule which eases the availability of players for the national team and if the national team players are available right away then more practice time to develop chemistry and cohesion for the national team.

A merger will make it easier to find sponsors and advertisers because there’s no more competition for their products and services. A merger may create new markets and business development opportunities for the corporations that own these teams.

If you look at our men’s volleyball, only the PVL has men’s volleyball which meant same schedule, common schedule for all the national team players which resulted in a silver medal finish at the SEAG in December last year.

The PSL has eight teams while the PVL has six (please correct me if I’m wrong), if in a short Unity Cup, we can have a single round robin with each team playing 13 games. Top four teams battle it out in one and done winner take all games all the way until a champion is crowned.

There are reports that one league wants only the top two or top four of each league, let’s have all the teams play and see who gets bragging rights. Let’s see new rivalries emerge and old ones rekindled.
