It has been a roller-coaster month for the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) so far.
Just last week, the league announced that Season 83 has already been canceled due to health and safety concerns that are still brought about by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This move by the UAAP has raised questions considering that just last November, the league was targeting an April 2021 opening for Season 83. On Thursday, a contract signing sealed the deal for Cignal TV alongside Smart Communications Inc. "to shine the spotlight on the nation’s best student-athletes from the top collegiate sports league in the country,"
Then, Season 84 entered the picture.
With Season 83 no more, the league shifted its focus on possibly holding a September 2021 opening for Season 84. In the virtual press conference during the contract signing between the league and its new media partners, UAAP Executive Director Attorney Rebo Saguisag said, "Our target will be the default traditional opening of September 2021," Saguisag also added, "That if the vaccines are here or the situation has improved so that's our target. Unless the board deems otherwise, it'll be adjusted again,"
